UEPS BOARD MEETING BRUSSELS January 2008

Although the new year has barely
started, UEPS has already swung
into action. The Board (President Jerzy
Jakosche, secretary-general Morley
Myers and Treasurer Yannis Daras), visited
our new Brussels headquarters on
January 4 and also had talks with officials
from the United Nations Regional
Information Centre for Western Europe
regarding possible partnership projects.
In presenting some decisions taken by
the Board, we also ask for your co-operation
in achieving several major initiatives
in 2008.
INVITATION TO KLAGENFURT,
AUSTRIA:
We would appreciate if delegates
accept UEPS invitation to attend a
National Associations Presidential
Meeting in Klagenfurt in Austria April 15-
16 2008. The agenda will focus on our
new Statutes. You will receive the proposed
draft of the Statutes at the end of
January A deadline of February 29 has
been set for sending your proposals and
amendments which will be discussed and
voted upon in Klagenfurt. Only written
proposals submitted before the Febuary
29 will be considered. The Statutes will
be formally approved at an Extraordinary
UEPS Congress in Crete, Greece, October
28-30, 2008.
EXTRAORDINARY UEPS CONGRESS
The Congress will take place on the
island of Crete, Greece. Arrival date
November 28, Congress October 29,
departure October 30. The Organising
Committee will offer a luxury room in the
5 star Aldemar Hotel to each Association
(two persons in double room) with full,
transportation from and to Heraklion
Airport and leisure partner programme
(www.aldemarhotels.com). If wished, delegates
can remain in Crete for the
"Sports Journalists School" until
November 1. In this case, there will be
an additional charge of 100 Euro, per
room, per night. The 1st UEPS Sports
Journalists School held in Athens and
Ancient Olympia May 23-30, 2007, was
an outstanding success with 220 participants
from 31 countries. The reaction
from our various partners and distinguished
speakers has been so positive
we expect the number of participants to
increase to over 300 for the second edition.
We urge our Associations to give
this project full support by sending at
least two young journalists to Crete in
November. The School participation fee is
only 300 Euros for four nights accommodation
in a 5 star hotel with full board,
internal transportation and a sports and
leisure programme. More details can be

UEPS/UEFA FOOTBALL SEMINAR,
LYON, FRANCE, FEBRUARY, 10-12.
Because of the time pressure, the
Board have decided to invite some distinguished
football journalists to speak at
the seminar, in addition to leading UEFA
and French officials.
Participants will arrive on February 10
and depart February 12. With increasing
focus on 2008 European Championships
to be held in Austria and Switzerland
from June 7-29 this event will prove
informative as well as interesting to football
specialists. The Organising
Committee will cover accommodation
costs (with full board) and participation
fee.
UEPS BENIFIT CARDS
UEPS has secured agreements with
various international companies which
offer benifits to sports journalists in
Europe carrying UEPS cards. These benefits
include concessions for travel and
accommodation. UEPS will provide cards
for 2008 at no charge, but there will be a
fee of just 10 EUROS for successive
year
