UEPS BOARD MEETING BRUSSELS January 2008
Although the new year has barely started,
UEPS has already swunginto action.
The Board (President JerzyJakosche,
secretary-general MorleyMyers and
Treasurer Yannis Daras),
visitedour new Brussels headquarters on
January 4 and also had talks with officials
from the United Nations Regional
Centre for Western Europere garding
possible partnership projects.
In presenting some decisions taken by
the Board, we also ask for your co-operationin
achieving several major initiativesin 2008.
INVITATION TO KLAGENFURT,AUSTRIA:
We would appreciate if delegatesaccept UEPS invitation to attend aNational Associations
PresidentialMeeting in Klagenfurt in Austria April 15-16 2008. The agenda will focus on
ournew Statutes. You will receive the proposeddraft of the Statutes at the end ofJanuary
A deadline of February 29 hasbeen set for sending your proposals andamendments which
will be discussed andvoted upon in Klagenfurt. Only writtenproposals submitted before
the Febuary29 will be considered. The Statutes willbe formally approved at an
ExtraordinaryUEPS Congress in Crete, Greece, October28-30, 2008.
EXTRAORDINARY UEPS CONGRESS
The Congress will take place on theisland of Crete, Greece. Arrival dateNovember 28,
Congress October 29,departure October 30. The OrganisingCommittee will offer a
luxury room in the5 star Aldemar Hotel to each Association(two persons in double
room) with full,transportation from and to HeraklionAirport and leisure partner
programme(www.aldemarhotels.com). If wished, delegatescan remain in Crete
for the"Sports Journalists School" untilNovember 1. In this case, there will bean
additional charge of 100 Euro, perroom, per night. The 1st UEPS SportsJournalists
School held in Athens andAncient Olympia May 23-30, 2007, wasan outstanding
success with 220 participantsfrom 31 countries. The reactionfrom our various partners
and distinguishedspeakers has been so positivewe expect the number of participants
toincrease to over 300 for the second edition.We urge our Associations to givethis
project full support by sending atleast two young journalists to Crete inNovember.
The School participation fee isonly 300 Euros for four nights accommodationin a 5
star hotel with full board,internal transportation and a sports andleisure programme.

UEPS/UEFA FOOTBALL SEMINAR,LYON, FRANCE, FEBRUARY, 10-12.
Because of the time pressure, theBoard have decided to invite some distinguished
football journalists to speak atthe seminar, in addition to leading UEFAand French
officials.Participants will arrive on February 10and depart February 12. With
increasingfocus on 2008 European Championshipsto be held in Austria and
Switzerlandfrom June 7-29 this event will proveinformative as well as interesting
to footballspecialists. The OrganisingCommittee will cover accommodationcosts
(with full board) and participationfee.
UEPS BENIFIT CARDS
UEPS has secured agreements withvarious international companies whichoffer
benifits to sports journalists inEurope carrying UEPS cards. These benefitsinclude
concessions for travel andaccommodation. UEPS will provide cardsfor 2008 at
no charge, but there will be afee of just 10 EUROS for successiveyear
